Fikih Tasamuh: The Interfaith Tolerance Construction of Rejoangung Village Community, Ngoro District, Jombang Regency
Abstract
The people of Rejoagung Village, especially in Ngepeh Hamlet, live in a harmonious atmosphere even though there are three different religions, namely Islam, Christianity, and Hinduism. Islam is the majority religion, while Christianity and Hinduism are minority religions. In the context of religious and state life, there are guidelines for life that function as a medium to create tolerance and harmony between religious adherents, namely through social ethics of the community. This paper aims to: a) understand the dynamics of the lives of the people of Rejoagung Village, especially in Ngepeh Hamlet, and b) find out how tolerance between religious communities is built as capital in the dynamics of national and state life amidst plurality. To answer these objectives, this study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with the social construction theory of Peter L. Berger and Thomas Luckmann. The results of the study show that the lives of the people of Rejoagung Village, Ngepeh Hamlet are peaceful, harmonious, and full of tolerance. Tolerance between religious communities in this village was not formed suddenly, but through three main forces that shape their social life. The three forces are individual awareness and understanding, existing culture and tradition, and the role of agents in society. These three elements run simultaneously and interact with each other in three stages of social construction, namely the externalization, objectivation, and internalization stages.
