Social Cognitive Transformation of Qur'an Memorizers from the Perspective of Neuroplasticity

Abstract

The study aims to examine the cognitive changes experienced by students who memorize the Al-Qur'an at PP An Nur Lopang Kembangbahu Lamongan. The study used a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. Data collection was carried out by interviewing and participating in observations of 2 students, 1 administrator of the Islamic boarding school. The data was then processed and analyzed using Jonathan A. Smith's Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) with the steps (1) Reading and Re-reading, Initial Noting, Developing Emergent Themes, Searching for connections a cross emergent themes, Moving the next cases (6) Looking for patterns across cases. Then its credibility was tested with data triangulation and member checking. The results showed that there were significant changes in students towards brain structure and function which showed neuroplasticity including: (1) There was an increase in long-term memory; (2) students' resilience to stress; (3) the development of metacognition; (4) the formation of a growth mindset that is integrated with the values ​​in the Al-Qur'an. The findings also show that there is a strategy for differentiating tahfidz classes carried out by the institution to support the optimization of students' working memory and prevent students from cognitive burden so that cognitive development and neuroplasticity in students run optimally.
