The Social Construction of the Jumat Pahing Ritual: Accommodation between Religion and Local Culture
Abstract
This study aims to analyze how the Senggowar Village community constructs the social reality of the Jumat Pahing ritual as a form of accommodation between Islamic values and local culture. Using a qualitative approach with a constructivist paradigm and qualitative ethnography , the research is analyzed using Peter L. Berger and Thomas Luckmann's theory of social construction (externalization, objectification, internalization) combined with the concept of social accommodation. The results found that Jumat Pahing functions as a social space that brings together various layers of society and serves as an arena where dynamic accommodation occurs through symbol reinterpretation and tradition selection. For instance, traditional offerings (sesaji) are reinterpreted and replaced with agricultural products as an expression of gratitude. This ritual plays an important role in maintaining social cohesion that is reflective, not merely mechanical. This continuous social construction process (through externalization, objectification, and internalization) affirms that the accommodation between religion and culture becomes the foundation for social sustainability and community integration amid changing times.
