Abstract

The contemporary ecological crisis requires a moral, spiritual, and educational response that is more holistic and transformative, highlighting the relevance of Islamic values in shaping ecological consciousness. As traditional Islamic educational institutions, pesantren hold significant potential in internalizing environmental ethics through Qur’anic teachings and the daily practices of their students. This study employs a qualitative approach grounded in the Living Qur’an framework and ethnographic methods to explore how Qur’anic principles such as trust (amanah), balance (mīzān), and the prohibition of corruption (fasād) are embodied in pesantren-based ecological practices. The findings reveal that traditions of cleanliness, waste management, greening activities, and disciplined use of water and energy serve as concrete expressions of Qur’anic values lived by the santri. These practices are internalized through habituation, the exemplary conduct of kiai and teachers, and a collective culture that frames ecological action as an extension of worship and moral virtue. Ecotheological analysis further demonstrates that pesantren function as centers of environmental ethics education, effectively integrating faith with ecological practice. Thus, pesantren possess strategic relevance as models of sustainable education and agents of ecological transformation in addressing contemporary environmental challenges.
