Al-Farabi’s Philosophy of Islamic Education and Its Relevance to Character Formation in Modern Education
Pemikiran Filsafat Pendidikan Islam Al-Farabi dan Relevansinya terhadap Pembentukan Karakter dalam Pendidikan Modern
Abstract
The philosophical thought of Islamic education proposed by Al-Farabi provides an important foundation for the formation of an ideal human character through the integration of reason, morality, and spirituality. In the context of modern education, which often emphasizes cognitive and instrumental aspects, Al-Farabi’s ideas concerning the purpose of education, namely achieving al-sa‘ādah (true happiness) and the perfection of intellect, remain highly relevant. This study aims to examine in depth Al-Farabi’s philosophy of education and to analyze its relevance to character formation within modern educational systems. The research employs a qualitative approach using a library research method, involving critical analysis of both primary and secondary sources related to Al-Farabi’s thought as well as contemporary literature on character education. The findings reveal that Al-Farabi views education as a process of forming rational, moral, and civilized individuals who are capable of achieving balance between intellectual potential and ethical values. Key principles in Al-Farabi’s educational philosophy, such as the importance of teachers as moral exemplars, virtue-based education, and the development of rationality as a pathway to morality, demonstrate strong relevance to contemporary character education paradigms. The implications of this study indicate that integrating Al-Farabi’s philosophical values into modern educational systems can strengthen the ethical and spiritual dimensions of students. Consequently, education should not only focus on academic achievement but also aim at forming complete human beings who possess noble character and contribute positively to society.
