Abstract

Traditional communities today face challenges in preserving cultural traditions and religious values amid social changes and modernization. The Leva Nuang tradition, a cultural heritage of the people of Lamalera, is a traditional whaling season carried out collectively and passed down from generation to generation. This study aims to explore the meaning of religious values contained in the Leva Nuang tradition within the life of the Lamalera community. This study uses a qualitative method with an ethnographic approach to understand the cultural practices, beliefs, and social life of the community related to the implementation of Leva Nuang. The results of the study reveal several important religious values. Firstly, the tradition reflects values of belief and faith through prayers and customary rituals addressed to God and ancestors for safety and abundant sustenance. Secondly, Leva Nuang embodies the value of gratitude and respect for nature as a gift from the Creator. Thirdly, the tradition strengthens social solidarity, cooperation, kinship, and togetherness among community members in carrying out whaling activities. Lastly, the tradition upholds moral values such as responsibility, obedience to customary rules, and mutual respect within the community. The Leva Nuang tradition not only strengthens the vertical relationship between humans and God but also enhances horizontal relationships among community members. Preserving this tradition is important for maintaining cultural identity, religious awareness, and social harmony within the Lamalera community. Overall, Leva Nuang plays a significant role in the spiritual and cultural life of the Lamalera people.
