Environmental Theophany as a Cosmological Ethic: The Dialectic between the Philosophical Principle of Memayu Hayuning Bawana and Ecosufism

Abstract

This study aims to examine the dialectic between the philosophical principle of Memayu Hayuning Bawana in Javanese tradition and ecosufism in Islam as the foundation for developing a cosmological ethic based on environmental theophany. Using a philosophical-comparative approach, the study explores three main aspects: first, the concept of Memayu Hayuning Bawana as a manifestation of ecological awareness deeply rooted in Javanese society; second, the elaboration of ecosufism as a paradigm that integrates the spiritual dimension of Sufism with ecological awareness within the framework of tawhid; and third, the identification of philosophical resonances between the two traditions in constructing a holistic environmental ethic. The findings show that both spiritual traditions share a fundamental view of nature as a space of theophany (a manifestation of Divine presence), implying a human responsibility to care for all of creation rather than exploit it. Inner transformation is a key prerequisite for ecological harmony in both traditions, emphasizing the control of ego and desire as the roots of exploitative behavior toward nature. The dialogue between Memayu Hayuning Bawana and ecosufism produces a synthesis that offers an alternative perspective to the dominant anthropocentric and materialistic paradigms in modern environmental discourse. This research contributes to the development of a spirituality-based environmental ethic that has the potential to bridge the gap between local wisdom and universal values, while also responding to the contemporary ecological crisis through an approach that integrates the material and spiritual dimensions of human–nature relations.
