Reconstructing the Qur’anic Understanding of Anthropomorphism in the Theology of Mirza Bashiruddin Mahmud Ahmad

Abstract

This research is a study of anthropomorphic theological verses in the Ahmadiyya interpretation by Bashiruddin Mahmud Ahmad. The selection of the theme of anthropomorphic verses is very necessary to examine because these verses often become a subject of debate among theological scholars and are a fundamental part of Islamic teachings. In addition, the Ahmadiyya sect is a controversial group within Islam, such as the claim by its leader, Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, that he is al-Masi>h} al-Maw’u>d, the promised Messiah whose coming was foretold in the end times. The purpose of this research is to understand Bashiruddin's tendency in interpreting verses related to theological discourse, especially anthropomorphism. The method applied in this research is the descriptive-analytical method by collecting several data sources through documentation studies. Data analysis was conducted using the theological theories put forth by Muhammad Imarah and Mar’i bin Yusuf al-Muqaddisiy. In this study, it was found that Bashiruddin, when interpreting anthropomorphic theological verses, leaned more towards the Ash'ariyyah group by using the reasoning of ta’wi>l, which directs the literal meaning of the words to their implied meanings, thereby facilitating the understanding of the verses of the Qur'an.
