A Group Counseling Approach in Developing Santri Discipline: An Explanatory Sequential Study at Sunan Drajat Islamic Boarding School, Lamongan

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the implementation of group counseling in improving students’ discipline at Sunan Drajat Islamic Boarding School (Pondok Pesantren Sunan Drajat), Lamongan. The study employed a mixed-methods approach with an explanatory sequential design: quantitative measurement using a one-group pretest–posttest design, followed by qualitative exploration through observations of group processes and facilitator field notes to explain the observed changes. The group counseling intervention was conducted in six sessions (60–90 minutes per session) across the stages of formation (Session 1), transition (early Session 2), working (Sessions 2–5), and termination (Session 6). The facilitator fostered a sense of safety through a group contract covering confidentiality, mutual respect, and a commitment to punctual attendance. Results of a paired-samples t-test involving 10 students indicated a significant increase in discipline scores from the pretest (M = 81.60) to the posttest (M = 93.30), t(9) = 8.66, p < .001, with a mean difference of 11.70 points. Qualitative findings suggested that changes in disciplined behavior were influenced by reinforcing the meaning of rules as a form of worship, understanding time-management strategies, peer support, and self-control exercises practiced in the dormitory setting. The study’s implications emphasize that structured group counseling aligned with pesantren culture has the potential to serve as a guidance and counseling strategy for improving students’ discipline.
